Apply for Housing, Spring 2010

Before starting the online housing application process, please read through ALL the information below.

What do I need before I begin?

• You'll need your VCU student ID number. When you first use the Residential Gateway, both your username and your password will be set to your VCU student ID number (the "V" number included in your acceptance packet). You can also find it on the front page of eServices once logged-in.
• Review the VCU freshmen residence halls and the residential villages options.
• Review the 2009-10 Housing Rates, updated 6/23/2009

How do I fillout a housing application? Completing yor application is a 3-step process:

• Step 1 - Sign into the Residential Gateway.
• Step 2 - List your three residence hall/room style preferences, and, if you wish, list a roommate preference.
  
  For all residence hall choices except those noted below, choose "building" from the drop-down options on your application, then select your choice of room/apartment style.

   Room and apartment styles

   Single - you have your own individual bedroom. Single rooms in freshman halls are extremely limited.

   Double - you share the room with one roommate. Most rooms in freshman halls are doubles.

   Triple - you share the room with two roommates.

   Suite - your room is part of a living space with adjoining bath(s) shared by several students. Four-person suites are extremely limited.

   Flat - all rooms in the apartment are located on one level.

   Townhouse - rooms in the apartment are on 2 levels (upstairs and downstairs).

   What not to do when choosingyour room preferences and/or roommate

   Do not list the same room choice three times. Choose three different room styles and/or residence halls on your application.

   Do not list more than three preferences. The housing application system will not acknowledge to your additional choices.

   Do not list more than one roommate preference. You may choose one person, and that person must also choose you. If you and two friends wish to share a triple room, send an email with your request to vcuhousing@vcu.edu. Include all three names and all three VCU student ID numbers in your message.

   Do not choose a specialty housing option unless you have been approved by the VCU department in charge of that residency option (such as pre-engineering, acceleration, Honors Program).

   Remember: Single rooms and 4-person suites are very limited. No matter how early you apply, consider also choosing a double room in your preferred hall(s) or an 8-person suite when listing your preferences.

   Incoming freshmen are housed in the VCU freshmen residence halls: Brandt, the Gladding Residence Center Apartments (GRC I), the Gladding Residence Center Phase II and III (GRC II and III), Johnson, Rhoads and Cabaniss.    International students and ELP students

   The VCU International Studies Department provides a limited number of rooms in the Gladding Residence Center Apartments (GRC1) for new international students and for students in the VCU ELP language programs. Students in the ELP program should contact Pam Haney via email at pohaney@vcu.edu or call (804) 828-0808. To list this choice on your application, choose "building" from the drop-down options on the room preferences page, then select the GRC Apartments.

   Honors Program Students

   West Grace Student Housing is reserved exclusively for students accepted to the VCU Honors program. To request this housing, contact Carrie Connolly in the Honors College at (804) 828-1803.

   Roommate Preference

   On the Roommate Selection Page of your application, list your preferred roommate's name and include his/her VCU student ID number (the "V" number). Your friend must then list your name and your VCU student ID number on his/her housing application. Both applications must be completed (including receipt of the pre-payment fee) within a week of each other. You and your roommate must also choose the exact same residence halls/room styles on your housing applications, in the exact same order.

   Accommodations due to special needs or health concerns

   To request specific housing accommodation due to special needs or circumstances, email vcuhousing@vcu.edu. Include your name and your VCU student ID number in your message and briefly describe your circumstances and requirements.

   Complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) every year.

   Specialty Housing Options

   International students and ELP students

   Graduate students (academic and health care professional) are assigned to the MCV Low Rise halls located on the downtown Health Sciences campus: Bear, McRae, Warner and Rudd. Bear and Warner halls are co-ed, segregated by floor; McRae is all-male; Rudd is all-female. • Step 3 - Pay the required $250 pre-payment fee, which is a "down payment" applied toward your Spring 2010 housing charges. It is credited to your VCU student account.
  
  The fee may be paid securely online with a debit or credit card, or you may use the Pre-payment Form to mail a check or money order. If paying by this method, please allow 5 - 10 business days for delivery. Your application will be marked "complete" based on the date this fee is received via mail.
  
  Fee waivers: The fee is waived for students on full scholarships (such as Presidential Scholars) or in cases of financial hardship. You must fill out a housing application first, stopping at the payment section of the application. To request a fee waiver, email the Central Housing Office at vcuhousing@vcu.edu and include your name, VCU student ID number and your reasons for the request.

Room Assignment Notification

VCU administrative offices, including Central Housing, will be closed December 19, 2009 – January 3, 2010 for Winter Break, re-opening Monday, January 4th.

Students who have completed a Spring 2010 housing application online by Friday, December 11, 2009 (including the payment or waiver of the $250 fee) will receive a Room Assignment Notification letter no later than December 18th. Letters will be sent electronically via the VCU student email system.

Students who complete a housing application online after December 11th will receive room assignment notification in early January 2010.

Spring 2010 Housing Charges

12-month upperclassmen halls: For new students assigned to Ackell, Broad & Belvidere, Cary & Belvidere or RAMZ Hall, housing charges for the Spring 2010 semester will cover the period January 4 – July 23, 2010.

Due to established accounting procedures, Spring housing charges are posted to a student’s account as two entries: 1) The January 2010 charge, based on the per-day rate for the assigned hall, is noted as “Fall Housing” and 2) the standard semester cost for the assigned hall (February – July) is noted as “Spring Housing.” Both entries will then total the full housing charges due for the Spring term, January 4 – July 23.

9-month halls: Spring 2010 housing charges are based on the regular semester rate (January 17 – May 13, 2010). One total charge, noted as “Spring Housing,” will be posted to the student’s account.
