How was my 2009-10 housing assignment made?

Your room assignment was made based on:

• The date your online housing application was completed (which includes the date your $250 fee was paid)
• The information you provided (residence hall choices, roommate matching and smoking/non-smoking preferences)

How do I accept my assignment and complete my 2009-10 housing contract?

The last step in the housing assignment process is to electronically "sign" your 2009-10 housing contract. This step is also an online process.

• You will need your VCU student identification number (this is the number that begins with a Capital "V"), your VCU eID (this is the ID which you use to check your VCU email) and your eID password

• Be sure to carefully review your contract's Terms and Conditions for detailed information regarding the room cancellation policy and other contractual issues
• Your online housing contract must be completed within seven (7) days of the date of the e-mail notification letter, or your 2009-10 residence hall assignment will be cancelled
• View/sign your contract

Why did I not receive my choice of residence halls?

• In the room assignment process, the goal of the Residential Life and Housing Office is to place you in one of your preferred room styles and residence hall choices. But because we receive a high volume of applications, we cannot absolutely guarantee you will receive your preferences. Space limitation does eventually become a factor; single rooms are very limited and fill quickly, as do some residence halls
• Our computerized Residential Management System processed your room assignment based on the date your housing application was completed and on the exact listing of your hall/room-style preferences. You may wish to review your choices in case they were too specific or limiting

My friend and I wanted to room together, but we were not assigned to the same space. What happened?

• Roommate information and residence hall preferences must match exactly in order for our computerized system to place two students in the same room. Otherwise, the computer cannot make a "match"
• For example, if both Sam and Brad have listed each other's names and VCU id numbers as roommate choice, but Sam choose Brandt Hall as his first residence hall preference, while Brad picked Johnson Hall as his first choice, the computerized system cannot make a complete match

I was not assigned to the Residential Village which I chose. What happened?

• Although the Residential Life and Housing Office accommodates as many housing preferences as possible for incoming students, space limitation does eventually become a factor in the room assignment process
• If you were assigned to a Residential Village that was not your first preference, the enrichment opportunities offered by this innovative living environment will still provide highly beneficial academic and social support during your first year at VCU
• You may not choose to participate in every aspect of Village life on your assigned floor, but you may find new friends and experience other opportunities that far exceed your original choice and expectations
• Some residential villages are very popular and fill quickly. When this happens, you will be placed on another floor or in a different hall
• Room changes are also possible once you are on campus, though none are permitted during the first 3 weeks of the semester. For information, visit the Central Housing Office in Cary and Belvidere Student Apartments - 301 West Main Street, First Floor - after mid-September

May I request a room change?

• Assignment cancellations are sometimes received by the VCU Central Housing Office during the summer months. However, our first priority will be to assign those vacancies to new incoming students who have not yet received a 2009-10 housing assignment. While the possibility of a room change does exist prior to Fall 2009 Move-In Weekend (August 15 - 16), it is unlikely
• To request a possible room change prior to Move-In, you may send an e-mail to vcuhousing@vcu.edu. In the message, include your full name, VCU student identification number, current assignment (hall and room number) and your preferred hall. If space becomes available, we will contact you via your VCU e-mail account
• You should assume you will be moving into your originally assigned space unless you hear from us via email by August 1, 2009. Many students who intially think they want a room change find that once they move into their assigned space and get to know other people in their hall, they no longer want to change. Even if you did not get one of the halls which you chose, try to keep an open mind. You may be surprised to find that your assignment works out just fine.
