Application FAQs

How and when will I get my room assignment?
Fall semester Room Assignment Notification Letters are sent via the VCU student email system in early June and then throughout the summer, as applications are received. Spring semester assignment letters are emailed in mid-December and in early January (after the university’s Winter Break), also as applications are received.

Check your VCU email in-box for your letter and for other important housing-related messages.

How do I sign my housing contract online?
All incoming on-campus residents must sign their housing contract online within five (5) days of being notified of their room assignment. Instructions will be included in your Room Assignment Notification Letter. If you do not sign your contract within that 5-day period, your assignment will be cancelled.

When signing your contract, you will also be required to include the name, street address, and phone numbers of an Emergency Contact person.

Print a copy of your housing contract; you will need it when you check into your residence hall.

Will I get my preferred room and residence hall choice?

For freshmen: Fall housing is guaranteed if the housing application and fee are received by June 1st. Spring housing is limited and based on availability.

For upperclassmen transfer students, graduate students, and current off-campus VCU students seeking on-campus housing: Housing for Fall and Spring semesters is very limited and is based on availability.

What if I change my mind? Can I cancel?
Students who wish to cancel a Fall housing assignment/contract and to receive a refund of the $250 prepayment fee must submit a request in writing by June 30th via the VCU email system. After that date, Fall cancellations are not allowed.

Requests to cancel a Spring housing assignment/contract are considered on a case-by-case basis. For details, students should contact the VCU Central Housing Office via email at vcuhousing@vcu.edu or call (804) 828-7666.

What if I want to change my room assignment?
VCU Residential Life & Housing does not permit room changes until after the third week of classes each semester. However, every effort is made to place each resident student in a comfortable room.

Rooms are allocated first-to-apply, first-assigned, based on availability and on the date your application is completed, which includes payment or waiver of the required $250 pre-payment fee. You are urged to apply early to better ensure you receive one of your residence hall/room style preferences.
